Studio Ghibli is often described as the 'Disney of Japan', a comparison which I think is a little unfair. Now I'm not Disney bashing but I find Studio Ghibli films much deeper on emotional and psychological levels with an innate beauty that isn't contrived or forced. What Miyazaki and his studio do is tell more than just a story. They present snapshots of life and deliver pertinent messages through allegory, likeable characters and breath-taking animation. For me, Studio Ghibli is more than just a mainstream family fun film company and more of a medium that, at times, can communicate how fragile and complicated situations and life can be.
